Few bands summon the abyss like Coltsblood. Their sound is much less music than it’s an immovable drive, a seismic shift beneath the floor of doom steel. With Obscured Into Nebulous Nightfall, their upcoming LP on Translation Loss Data, the UK trio honors their roots whereas carving out a path of evolution—a file they describe as “pure escapism conjured from a primal intuition to create one thing loud, uncooked, and visceral.”
Right this moment, Decibel is proud to unveil “Waning of the Wolf Moon”, a monitor that bassist/vocalist John McNulty calls a lament for the endling—the final of a species. Impressed by the extinction of wolves within the UK and the vanity of humanity’s perception in its separation from nature, the music grieves for all creatures misplaced or teetering on the sting.
“Because the music closes, the dying heartbeat of the wolf echoes the sluggish dying of nature and humanity,” the band explains. “It displays the waning moon, the top of a cycle, probably for the final time. A haunting reminder of our interconnectedness and the burden of what we’ve forgotten.”
That grief manifests in Coltsblood’s signature funeral-march pacing, dragging the listener by way of a cavernous dirge earlier than collapsing right into a pulse-like outro that feels much less like a music ending and extra like a life fading away. The accompanying video—crafted by McNulty himself—solely deepens the sense of loss, presenting stark and unsettling imagery to match the monitor’s suffocating weight.
Coltsblood name this album “a continuation of what we have now all the time been—a cathartic outlet for every thing too huge and unfathomable to place into phrases.” Few bands wield that catharsis as successfully.
