35 years in the past, hip-hop acquired a brand new queen.

Queen Latifah launched her debut album, All Hail the Queen, in November 1989, and right this moment, World Cafe correspondent John Morrison talks about how that album shook issues up.

“Rap music traditionally has, after all, been a male-dominated area — not simply demographically however, like, in perspective. Queen Latifah, with this file, actually got here onto the scene and challenged that.”

Morrison talks about how Queen Latifah carved out an area for girls in hip-hop and altered the way in which ladies have been seen by the boys within the business. Plus, he’ll get into the legacy of that debut album.
